Plastic finishes to the eaves detailing can look extremely neat as well as providing a durable maintenance free situation. Tongued and groove soffit panelling is aesthetically very pleasing but relatively simple to install. What a roofline is made of

Fascia

The fascia is the board fixed along the rafter ends at the eaves. It closes off the roof edge and it carries the gutter, so it takes the weight of a full gutter in a downpour along with everything else the weather does to it. A solid fascia replaces the original timber outright; a cappit fascia caps over the existing board where the timber beneath it is still sound. Which of the two is appropriate depends on the condition of what is already there, and that is a decision made on site rather than from the ground.

Soffit

The soffit closes the underside of the eaves, between the fascia and the wall face. Tongued and groove panelling gives it a finished appearance and is relatively simple to install. Where the roof space needs ventilating, a vented soffit or a continuous vent strip is worked into the run — air entering at the eaves is what keeps condensation off the underside of the roof, and a roof space with no path for air through it will find the damp eventually.

Rainwater goods

Rainwater goods are the gutters, downpipes, hoppers and the fittings that join them. Half round is the common profile on most houses; square and ogee suit a more decorative elevation; deepflow carries more water where the roof area is large or the pitch is steep. The profile matters as much as the colour — an undersized gutter on a big roof will overshoot in heavy rain whatever it looks like from the pavement.

Why plastic rather than timber

Timber fascias and soffits need painting to stay sound, and the paint gives up first where the board meets the gutter and stays wet. Once the timber behind it has gone soft the gutter loses its fixing, and what began as a decorating job becomes a carpentry one.

uPVC does not rot and does not need painting. It wipes down, and it stays where it was fixed. That is the practical case for it, and it is why most roofline replacement is now done in plastic rather than timber.
